I spent years far from home, staring into the abyss of conflict, first as a soldier then as a civilian contractor, carrying the heavy weight of our nation's choices. I came back, and after years of integrating back into society I became a mother, as our nation increasingly felt... broken. Not by bombs or bullets, but by a rot from within.
I saw it in the eyes of my neighbors, friends and family, the exhaustion etched into their faces after endless shifts, working for stagnant wages as prices for basic necessities increased exponentially. Now with the this administration, it’s all over the news, the endless coverage of bureaucrats working to cut the very lifelines – Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid – that our elders and most vulnerable depend on. As I watch, a growing knot of anger builds in my chest at, as the rich continue to get richer, their tax breaks increasing and paid for on the backs of the working class, while corporate greed and economic injustice squeezes every last drop from those who actually keep this country running.
They tell us to be grateful, to be quiet, to just keep our heads down and work harder. They say we’re unpatriotic if we question the system that squeezes every bit of life we have. But I know what patriotism truly means. It’s not blind obedience; it’s fighting for the soul of this nation, for the people who are its beating heart. And right now, that heart is failing.
That’s why when I heard about "The People’s Sick Day," something ignited in me, a spark of the old fire. "When the workers rest, the system breaks." Those words hit me like a revelation, because it’s the truth they don’t want us to know. The working class – the service workers, the warehouse employees, the truck drivers, the hotel staff, the restaurant and retail workers – are the gears of this machine. And they've been taking us for granted for far too long.
This isn’t just about a day off; it’s about a demand. A demand for real change. It's about shaking the foundations and telling those in power that we’ve had enough. We’re calling for accountability, for the impeachment of a man who has further divided this nation and defies our courts and tramples on our constitution. We’re telling Congress: Hands OFF our Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. We're screaming: NO more tax breaks for the rich! We are standing against corporate greed and economic injustice, because this isn't the America I served, this isn’t the America my friends died for.
The plan is simple, yet revolutionary: a three-day national sick day. It’s a sneak attack, building momentum before the corporate giants even know what hit them. We’re not announcing dates yet, because surprise is our weapon. But trust me, it’s coming.
It’s not just about walking off the job, though for many, that will be their act of defiance. One day of mass sick-outs costs billions. Three? That’s power. That’s how we remind this system exactly who it depends on. We will be releasing the dates 48 hours in advance as to not give those in power a heads up.
And if you can’t call out, if your job won’t allow it, you can still show up in solidarity by not spending money, wearing black, posting the hashtag, changing your profile picture to show solidarity, doing the bare minimum at work, avoiding unpaid overtime or extra favors, and supporting others by watching kids, sharing rides, or spreading the message for someone who can’t rest.
To my fellow medical personnel and emergency workers: we honor your service, and you are exempt. Your fight is on the front lines every day. This action targets the industries that keep the economy moving, the ones that feel our absence most acutely.
This is our time to rise up and fight for our freedom. We’ve all served this nation in our own way, we raise its children and future leaders, we build its wealth and we refuse to let the bastards grind us down anymore.
So, get ready. The People’s Sick Day is coming.
